Uvalde Shooter Could Have Been Stopped in Three Minutes, Classroom Door Key 'Was Never Needed'

The mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde could have been stopped within three minutes if police armed with rifles and body armor engaged the shooter rather than take cover and hide in the name of officer safety, Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw testified Tuesday.

"Three minutes after the subject entered the West building, there was sufficient number of armed officers wearing body armor to isolate, distract and neutralize the subject," McCraw said during a public hearing. "The only thing stopping the hallway of dedicated officers from entering room 111 and 112 was the on-scene commander who decided to place the lives of officers before the lives of children."

'The officers had weapons ... [they] had body armor. The children had none.'

McCraw said the commander, who he identified as Uvalde school district Police Chief Pete Arredondo, had officers waiting for a key "that was never needed" because the door had a "dysfunctional" strike plate and was therefor likely never secured.

"I don't believe, based on the information that we have right now, that that [classroom] door was ever secured," McCraw said. "The door was unsecured."
