The famed Turning Angel statue in Natchez City Cemetery in Mississippi was toppled in a suspected act of vandalism on Tuesday. One of the angel's wings was broken.
"The Turning Angel is a landmark of Natchez and has been in its spot in the Natchez City Cemetery since it was placed there by the owner of the Natchez Drug Company to commemorate the lives of five girls who died in the building when it exploded in 1908," The Natchez Democrat reported. The Turning Angel was the inspiration for a New York Times best selling novel of the same name by Greg Iles. From The Natchez Democrat: Natchez Police Chief Walter Armstrong said police are investigating the incident as a destruction of property case and are asked anyone in the area with surveillance cameras to share any video that might help locate possible suspects."I can think of one reason. On Monday afternoon, Black Lives Matter leader Shaun King called for statues, murals and stained glass windows of "White Jesus" to be targeted and tweeted "tear them down" to his million followers on Twitter.
Later that night, St. John's Church in Washington, DC was vandalized with the letters "BHAZ" for Black House Autonomous Zone.
Also later that night, Catholic gravestones were vandalized with swastikas and anti-Catholic language at Providence College in Rhode Island. Keveon Gomera, 26, was charged with defacing the gravesite and according to Catholic News Agency, "A man who believes he encountered Gomera before the assault told local NBC affiliate WJAR that Gomera was carrying a bucket of paint and accused Providence College of 'being part of the slave plantations' and said he was going to light an American flag on fire." On Tuesday, this Turning Angel statue was found toppled. On Wednesday, a statue of Jesus was defaced with the word "HATE" written on his forehead at a Church in Phoenix, Arizona according to Catholic priest Eduardo Montemayor. Perhaps it's all just a coincidence... or perhaps it's not. A fund was set up to repair the statue for anyone who wishes to donate.
