Armed only with a clipboard, a pen and an Obama T-shirt, activist Mark Dice succeeded in getting Americans to sign a petition without even telling them what it was for or why he was asking for their support. Dice regularly highlights how brainwashed many Americans are by asking them to sign ridiculous phony petitions. This time, however, he garnered many signatures without even bothering to explain what it was the people were signing. In the video, Dice only explains that he doesn’t have time to get into the details of the petition, and says its just for “some programs we need.” Nevertheless, people STILL sign their names. “I don’t know what it is, but it’s all good.” One man states, blindly signing the paper and walking off. “It’s a lot of things we need help with.” Dice tells one girl, who asks what the petition is for. She initially seems curious as to what the details are, but still signs her name without finding out any details. “It’s just to support the thing, yada yada yada…” Dice tells her as she signs. “I still don’t know what I’m signing for,” another man says, while he signs the petition anyway. “I really need you to help out.” Dice tells another man who immediately signs the paper. “I really appreciate you supporting whatever it is.” Dice tells him. While one older couple tells Dice that they don’t have time to sign if he doesn’t have time to tell them what the petition is for, the overwhelming majority of younger people simply sign their name on the paper, several without even asking what it is. The footage is remarkable in that while it could be argued that some of Dice’s previous phony petitions may have been signed out of misunderstanding or confusion, there is simply no way that can be the case in this instance. The footage highlights the disturbing possibility that many Americans will literally sign away their rights without even knowing it, or being pressured in any way to do so. The only signifier to provide any context during each exchange is the Obama t-shirt Dice is wearing. If the t-shirt prompted the people involved here consciously or sub consciously to blindly trust Dice, it makes the footage seem even more disturbing. |
