Hot Dog Vendor Shut Down "To Protect Existing Restaurants From Competition"

Chris | InformationLiberation

Here's a good example of "unrestrained free market capitalism destroying America"... oh wait never mind, it's the exact opposite.
MONROE, Mich. (WXYZ) - It's The Dog Pound vs. the City of Monroe, and it's been tied up in a legal battle for nearly two years.

All over a hot dog cart stand.

[...]Detroit attorney John Gillooly, who was hired to represent the city, says a number of reasons went into council's decision not to allow the hot dog cart in downtown Monroe, including protecting existing restaurants from competition and preserving a certain way of life.

98240 As a street vendor in another State I would like to chime in on this. America is built on opportunity and competition. Competition is a key to ANY successful business. NOBODY in their right mind would open a business and expect to have NO COMPETITION. Likewise, no government entity should involve itself in an attempt to CONTROL competition. A brick and mortar restaurant owner most assuredly has a much higher investment than a street vendor. However, that owner CHOSE to open a FULL SERVICE restaurant in an industry that has a failure rate of 80% in the first two years of operation. To attempt to put a street vendor out of business simply because they are "competing" with the brick and mortar is absurd. Also, take into consideration that a HOT DOG CART (in this case) cannot serve ANYTHING but what a health department considers "None potentially hazardous foods" which is hardly in competition with a full service, sit down restaurant. The bottom line is this: The CONSUMER makes the choice!

6841 The restaurants in Monroe sure must suck if they can't compete with a hot dog stand. How come mcdonalds can be across the street from burger king? Isn't that competion?
