Eating plenty of cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and broccoli may offer protection against cancer of the pancreas, a Swedish study cited in media on Friday said. For the study, the eating habits of 40,000 women and 49,000 men were monitored over seven years. Of the total, 135 were treated for cancer of the pancreas. While researchers found no general link between frequency of the cancer and consumption of fruits and vegetables, those who ate plenty of cabbage were less likely to contract the illness. Susanna Larsson at Stockholm's Karolinska institute, who co-led the study, told the Uppsala Nya Tidning newspaper that eating cauliflower, broccoli and Brussels sprouts appeared to offer the same protection as cabbage. The study is to be published in medical journal Cancer Epidemiology and Biomaker. |
