Trump's co-campaign managers Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles may achieve the impossible come November and actually lose the election to Kamala Harris.
"Trump allies told me they plan to assault [Kamala Harris's] left flank with accusations of Harris over-incarcerating young men of color when she was California's attorney general," The Atlantic's Tim Alberta reported on Sunday. As The Atlantic noted, Harris is "a former prosecutor who, if anything, is known for being too tough on crime." Two weeks ago, The Atlantic reported that Trump's campaign thinks they're going to win in a landslide by replacing suburban white "Karens" with "Jamals and Enriques." "For every Karen we lose, we're going to win a Jamal and an Enrique," a reporter for The Atlantic recalled Trump's allies telling him. "Wiles nodded in approval" to the statement. "That's a fact," Wiles said. "I believe it. And I so believe we're realigning the party."
LaCivita spent last week bashing Project 2025 and praising women Secret Service agents as "badass."
Trump is repeating similar talking points on the campaign trail.
Trump has also repeatedly attacked Nayib Bukele by claiming his wildly successful gang crackdown was not responsible for El Salvador's plummeting crimes rates. Instead, Trump insisted he has simply shipped all his criminals to the US.
The Wall Street Journal reported in July 2023 that Bukele's gang crackdown had reduced the number of Salvadorans illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border "by 44%." As a reminder, the Trump-Kushner administration threw open our federal prisons with the First Step Act in 2018 in response to lobbying from Chabad-Lubavitch and the Koch brothers. The bill granted early release to carjackers, rapists, bank robbers and murderers in the name of fighting "systemic racism" and helped spawn a massive crime wave. Trump should be running on cracking down on criminals to make our cities livable again but instead he's bashing Bukele for succeeding where he failed.
