President-elect Javier Milei traveled to New York City together with "a protege of George Soros" and donned a kippah to visit the grave of Rabbi Menachem Schneerson for his first foreign trip after his surprise victory.

"President-elect Javier Milei of Argentina flew to New York this morning to pray at the Ohel, the resting place of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory," Chabad.org said Monday on X.

"The non-Jewish Milei has not been shy about the inspiration he has gained from the Rebbe and his teachings, nor his admiration for the Jewish people. Today’s pilgrimage to the Rebbe's resting place in Queens, N.Y., is his first foreign trip since his surprise election as president of Argentina on Oct. 22."

"For his trip to New York, Milei traveled with a few members of his future cabinet, as well as Marc Stanley, the U.S. ambassador to Argentina, and Gerardo Werthein, an Argentinean Jewish businessman who is rumored to be in the running to become Argentina’s ambassador in Washington, D.C.," JTA reported.

"Another Argentinean Jewish businessman accompanied him to the rabbi's grave. Eduardo Elsztain is chairman and chief executive of IRSA, Argentina's largest real estate company, which manages the largest shopping malls in Buenos Aires. Elsztain, a protege of the Jewish financier George Soros, has also supported Chabad social programs and Jewish youth-related projects in Argentina."

Milei on Saturday visited "renowned Kabbalist Rabbi David Pinto" in Buenos Aires to take part in a "havdalah ceremony" and receive a "special blessing" from the Kabbalist.

"At the event, he also voiced his unwavering support for Israel's right to self-defense, denounced Hamas terrorism, and called for the return of hostages," the Jerusalem Post reported. "Furthermore, he announced his plan to relocate the Argentine embassy from Herzliya to Jerusalem."
During the gathering, Pinto recited a special prayer for the well-being of captives. Following this, Milei expressed deep appreciation for the support he received during the election campaign and reaffirmed his commitment to stand by the Jewish community and the State of Israel. He also participated in the havdalah ceremony, wearing a kippah on his head.

Milei vowed to maintain a strong connection with Rabbi Pinto and the Jewish community in Argentina, saying, "I celebrate this beautiful country and pray to God to protect the nation of Argentina so that it can be restored to its former glory. I am confident that, with the help of God, we will succeed." In response, the rabbi blessed him and expressed his ongoing prayers for Milei's success.
Milei said previously he wants to convert to Judaism from Catholicism and has a rabbi as his "spiritual guide."

The World Christian Database in 2022 reported that Argentines are 88.77% Christian, 6.9% agnostic, 2% Muslim, 0.4% Jewish and 0.9% atheist.
