"After considering the parties' briefs and arguments, I find that a trial beginning on March 4, 2024, would give the defense adequate time to prepare for trial and ensure the public's interest in seeing this case resolved in a timely manner," US District Judge Tanya Chutkan said, setting the trial date to one day before Super Tuesday. "The trial will start three years, one month and 27 days after the events of Jan. 6, 2021," she said. "The trial involving the Boston Marathon bombing began less than two years after the events. The trial involving Zacarias Moussaoui for his role in the September 11 attacks was set to begin one year after the attacks; but due to continuances, appeals, and voluminous discovery, it began roughly four years later." Chutkan -- who is the only federal judge in DC to sentence Jan 6 defendants to sentences longer than government prosecutors requested -- said previously that events of Jan 6 were an attempt to "violently overthrow the government" to "stop the peaceful transition of power" and must be "met with absolutely certain punishment." "People gathered all over the country last year [in 2020] to protest the violent murder by the police of an unarmed man. Some of those protesters became violent," Chutkan said, defending the 2020 George Floyd riots. "But to compare the actions of people protesting, mostly peacefully, for civil rights, to those of a violent mob seeking to overthrow the lawfully elected government is a false equivalency and ignores a very real danger that the Jan. 6 riot posed to the foundation of our democracy," she said. "From setting a trial date for the day before 'Super Tuesday' to sending a fundraising email the moment of President Trump's processing in Fulton County, the Biden regime is no longer hiding its nakedly political motivations," Trump's campaign responded in a statement on Monday. "Deranged Jack Smith & his team of Thugs, who were caught going to the White House just prior to Indicting the 45th President of the United States (an absolute No No!), have been working on this Witch Hunt for almost 3 years, but decided to bring it smack in the middle of Crooked Joe Biden's Political Opponent's campaign against him," Trump said in a post on Truth Social. "Election Interference! Today a biased, Trump Hating Judge gave me only a two month extension, just what our corrupt government wanted, SUPER TUESDAY. I will APPEAL!" Charging Trump at all is a complete joke but holding his trial in Washington, DC under such a blatantly biased judge is just beyond parody.
