Under the blazing Arizona sun stands an encampment of military tents filled with some 2,000 people. They battle the heat by positioning themselves in front of a few large fans, but they are of little use when temperatures reach 145 degrees. Stun fences surround the perimeter, with four Sky Watch Towers bearing down on the occupants. Facial recognition software and K-9 units keep track of the people moving about, longing for their freedom.
For the residents of Tent City Jail, thei... (more)
One of the things about liberals that really fascinates me is their hypocrisy, especially when it comes to one of their favorite attacks on libertarians for opposing the welfare state. Whenever libertarians call for the abolition of the moral and economic abomination known as the welfare state, liberals have their standard knee-jerk attack: “You hate the poor! Libertarians hate the poor!”
The implication, of course, is that liberals love the poor. Nothing could be further from th... (more)
The "rulers" actually don't matter. They are vastly outnumbered by the people like you and me. The problem is those who legitimate the "rulers" with their votes, remaining silent when the "rulers" commit evils in their names.
Most of them do not feel bad about that. Many of them even cheer and applaud to their "rulers" and they defend the crimes they co... (more)
While attending the Agora Financial Symposium in Vancouver, I became aware that Americans enjoy some rights that Canadians do not: among them, the limited ability to carry weapons. Even private security guards seem unable to be armed in Canada. This does not make me feel safer. Quite the reverse.
Private people who carry guns make me feel safer.
So I would like to make a plea to my fellow citizens: please buy, carry, and even stockpile weapons. Carry them with you al... (more)
Remember when, in the wake of the 9/11 attack, the Patriot Act was controversial, held up as the symbolic face of Bush/Cheney radicalism and widely lamented as a threat to core American liberties and restraints on federal surveillance and detention powers? Yet now, the Patriot Act is quietly renewed every four years by overwhelming majorities in both parties (despite substantial eviden... (more)
On July 23 New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, one of the most implacably totalitarian figures in American political history, suggested that police nationwide should go on strike until the law-abiding public disarms itself.
"I don't understand why the police officers in this country don't stand up collectively and say, `we're going to go on strike," Bloomberg blurted in an interview with CNN's Piers Morgan. "We're not going to protect you unless you -- the public -- through your... (more)
In the last two weeks, we have seen the weakness of many left-liberals’ support for civil liberties. Last week, progressive bloggers, activists, and politicians piled on Chick-fil-A, whose president Dan Cathy has spoken critically of and supported groups that oppose gay marriage. For his stance on this issue, which is not all that different from Obama’s stance just a year ago, many in the gay rights movement decided to boycott his fast food chain. Whatever one thinks of this, it is well within t... (more)
In response to the Aurora movie theater killings, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg issued an extraordinary statement. A longtime opponent of the right to self-defense, Bloomberg told a CNN interviewer that police have a moral duty to rebel against the civilian population if they don't cede their remaining gun rights to the state:
I don’t understand why the police officers across this country don’t stand up collectively and say, ‘We’re going to go on strike. We... (more)
For as long as I’ve lived you’ve been my only home. I’ve had a wonderful life here. Your inhabitants are almost universally kind, and I’ve become lifelong friends with many of your citizens. All of my family lives here, everyone I have ever known or loved, and I will miss them all a lot. But after 22 years, I feel impelled to leave.
According to your founders, “When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one [... (more)
Some people are going insane because they think I said welfare should be banned because people may use the money to murder people. Let's look at what I actually said:
All over TV they're saying we need to ban guns as they enabled his attack, but where are the calls to ban welfare which enabled him to buy his guns?
I was pointing out the hypocrisy of advocating guns be banned because they "enabled"... (more)
The senseless and horrific killings last week at a movie theater in Colorado reminded Americans that life is fragile and beautiful, and we should not take family, friends, and loved ones for granted. Our prayers go out to the injured victims and the families of those killed. As a nation we should use this terrible event to come together with the resolve to create a society that better values life.
We should also face the sober reality that government cannot protect u... (more)
While it’s too soon to know what motivated that Aurora, Colorado, shooter to kill and maim all those people, one thing seems clear: Whatever his motive was, it wasn’t personally directed toward the victims. It seems as though he didn’t care who he shot, who he killed, who he maimed. The shooter just had no regard for the sanctity of innocent life.
He’s not the only one, however. For the past 11 years, the U.S. government, operating through its military and intelligence forces, ... (more)

Colorado native Abdulrahman al-Awlaki wasn’t in a movie theater when his life met a sudden, violent end. He was enjoying a backyard barbeque with his cousin in southeastern Yemen when the home was destroyed by a drone-delivered Hellfire missile.
Actor Jason Alexander of Seinfeld fame penned an anti-gun rant on his twitter account earlier today. The post made the front page of Reddit and it's getting a lot of circulation. It's an interesting read if not just to see the hypocrisy supporters of civilian disarmament exhibit.
This morning, I made a comment about how I do not u
Drone-Striker-In-Chief Barack Obama is taking a trip to Colorado to exploit the Dark Knight tragedy.
I can't help but laugh at the idea a man who kills as many people as James Holmes did in "the worst shooting in US history" every week by drone strikes and overseas wars is now going to the scene of another slaughter to "console" the victims. Funny, I've never seen him fly to Pakistan, Yemen... (more)
Why has America, a nation known for rugged individualism, descended so quickly into submission and a police state?
In 1831, the French political theorist and historian Alexis de Tocqueville received a commission to examine the prison system in America. His personal purpose, however, was to examine the character of a new America to which many Frenchmen looked as a model. After turning in his official report on prisons, De Tocqueville published his more personal findings: a pivotal... (more)

I define puttering as follows: "Unsystematic work that fills time without accomplishing much output." I define frittering as follows: "The refusal to take advantage of opportunities that have been placed in your hand."
I have known some very successful people over the years. Some have been rich. Others have been influential. All of them have had this in common. They have not puttered. T... (more)
Immigrants in the early 20th century celebrated US citizenship. The threat of illness, death, and separation from their wives and children failed to deter these Europeans who fled their home countries for the promise of a better future.
To them, the United States was a safe, free haven distant from the brutal tyrants and collectivist academics across the Atlantic. My ancestors knew that Ellis Island was the beginning of everything they'd ever wanted. Angelo LaSorsa put one foot on... (more)

Libertarians are frequently demonized and accused of supporting a state of lawlessness where everyone must "fend for themselves."
In fact, it's statism which creates a situation of lawlessness and "anarchy," in the negative sense of the word, because rather than people have full knowledge they must fend for themselves, they think the government will protect them. A task which, like keeping health insurance prices low, keeping drugs and weapons out of prisons, "managing" the econ... (more)
