Santa Maria, CA — A couple of lunchtime fights at Righetti High School Wednesday ended with police swarming the campus and 6 students arrested.

According to Kenny Klein, spokesperson for the Santa Maria Joint Union High School District, the trouble began when two female students got into a physical altercation which subsequently led to two boys fighting.

The fight apparently got messy as students began throwing food.

Two videos were taken showing a very large deputy waylaying a 100 lb high school girl.

The video released by the Santa Maria Times shows only 6 seconds of the interaction between the deputy and and two female students. The very large deputy swings and knocks the young girl to the ground.

In the short video it appears as if the girls were approaching the deputy.

However in the second, longer video, it appears that the girl who was struck by the deputy was simply walking one of her friends away from any further altercations when the deputy approached them. At this point the girls seemed to pull away and that is when the deputy lashed out.

According to Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s spokesperson, Kelly Hoover, when a deputy contacted one of the female suspects and attempted to detain her, she resisted arrest by pulling her arm away and attempting to escape.

“Her friends surrounded the deputy and pushed and hit him,” Hoover said a news release. “In the process of defending himself, he shoved the females away and one of the suspects was knocked to the ground.”

After this incident is when the deputy called for backup because of students who became angry after seeing him hit the girl. The call for backup resulted in the onslaught of police from surrounding areas, including a helicopter.

“I just think it’s ridiculous,” said Eric Alvarez, a junior. “The more cops that came, the worse it got.”

At one point an officer involved in was photographed with cheese covering his lower back.

Eventually the situation calms down and the students were allowed to leave. School is expected to resume as normal Thursday morning.

Six students were arrested during the lockdown, four males and two females. They were charged with resisting arrest resulting in injury to a deputy, battery on a peace officer, battery on another student on school grounds, assault on a school employee, possession of a knife on school grounds, possession of marijuana on school grounds, and resisting and obstructing officers in the performance of their duties.

The knife reportedly wasn’t used in the fight but was found on one of the students afterward, Hoover said.
