Savannah-Chatham Metro police and state troopers out of Georgia are rolling out "Operation Thunder," also known as "Operation Revenue Acceleration," where they seek to generate as much revenue as possible for themselves by going on a mass ticketing blitz for imaginary crimes such as seat belt violations. Under the guise of "public safety," the cops sped and weaved through traffic with loud startling sirens blaring to pull people over and write them tickets. GOHS Special Operations Division Director Powell Harrelson said it's "unfortunate" they have to "educate" the citizenry through tickets, but it's what "gets their attention." That they personally profit off the scheme is purely coincidental. Considering the number one cause of death for police officers is car accidents, many due to the reckless driving they perform while chasing people down to dole out tickets, it's clear they will not be taking their own advice. |
