Cop Tailgates Left Lane Driver, Tickets Her For Not Speeding

...how do you cope when you're doing the speed limit in the left lane and the tailgater is a cop?

That was the dilemma facing Dave Ballou's daughter on a trip from her Wyckoff home to college on the New Jersey Turnpike. A state trooper stayed less than a dozen feet from her bumper, according to Dave, while the 20-year-old maintained the 65-mph speed limit.

Why didn't she move to the middle lane?

"There was a tractor-trailer truck right next to her, and she didn't know what to do," dad explained. "Instead of … passing the truck … and risking a speeding ticket or [signaling] and slowing down … to move behind the truck … she maintained her speed, thinking this was OK."

It wasn't. The trooper pulled her over and issued a summons for failing to keep right. The cop wasn't interested in her fear of moving to the right. And he sure didn't want to hear complaints about his own driving.

"Too bad," he told her, noting that he gave her "three miles" to find a way to yield.
Note, the cop was breaking the law and actively endangering lives by tailgating the driver, but of course he has a badge and a gun so he doesn't have to follow the law.

20761 Slam on brakes is great advice. That'll teach not to tailgate.
But I'm glad the cop wrote the ticket...left lane is for PASSING; wish more cops would write tickets for failing to pass or yield. I consider that a service to greater society - not a burden. Note that the posted speed is a MAXIMUM speed; if too scared to speed up to pass, driver can slow down and then go to the right lane. That = No laws broken and everyone is happy.

71230 How stupid & self contradictory!
If the posted speed is the Max allowed then you are not allowed or should ever be expected to exceed it to pass (if you are currently doing the Max as in the story). Also, the person behind you, tailgaiting or not, is not allowed to go any faster than they were when keeping pace wth you at the Max. So, no reason at all to do anything different than the girl in the story. Cop is a brain dead freak just as the above commenter.
For the simpletons who just cannot ever get this : THE FASTEST ANYONE CAN EVER LEGALLY DO IN ANY LANE IS THE POSTED LIMIT (NO MATTER WHAT YOU CALL THE LANE).

71246 there are numerous signs throughout nj stating "left lane for passing only". so now she's complaining about receiving a ticket for violating a state ordinance? sorry, i'm with the cop on this one.
