Army admits secretly dumping 64 million pounds of nerve and mustard agents, 400,000 chemical-filled bombs, land mines, rockets and more than 500 tons of radioactive waste into the sea

It is no secret that the U.S. military has used the ocean as trashcan for munitions in the past. Peter discussed at the Old DSN how federal lawmakers were pressing the US Army to reveal everything it knows about a massive international program to dump chemical weapons off homeland and foreign shores. "The Army now admits that it secretly dumped 64 million pounds of nerve and mustard agents into the sea, along with 400,000 chemical-filled bombs, land mines and rockets and more than 500 tons of radioactive waste - either tossed overboard or packed into the holds of scuttled vessels." Brian pointed me to the Daily Press's in depth coverage of this whole issue. Registration is free and only takes a minute or two and is extremely worthwhile. Included at the site are maps of disposal sites (downloadable as pdfs), stories, descriptions of items dumped including nerve and musturd gas, and rather depressing pictures some are below the fold (all from Daily Press).

The British are dangerously successful in protecting their secrets. They will doubtless not admit, certainly not to the toothless newspaper journalists of today, that it was only a few years ago they updated their munition stocks in an underground military complex in South Wales, dumping the aged stocks at sea. In effect the same story.

For those unfamiliar with UK law, there is something called the Official Secrets Act and officials have to sign this. Truth is a very convenient official secret. This law does not apply to the public who are kept conveniently in the dark, though sometimes the secrets are so dark, the state would kill protect them.

Is there any thing left that our governments havent done.
The long term effects on the oceans is beyond frightening.
Could this be why all the coral reefs are dying out, who knows theres proberly again something else thats been done in our name we yet have to find out about.
The straw that broke the camels back comes to mind.

It is truly despicable that these thugs are accepted by the governments of the world, to do as they wish and get off scott free for their disreputable, cruel consciousness... honestly, where do these people get off? Dumping this putrid mess of chemicals into the 'blood' (lifeforce) of the world... the ocean.

If we continue to pollute our Ocean, to a point beyond recovery, then humans will pay in immense suffering.

And, why is there no sense of 'feelings' for the beautiful creatures of the sea who have no voice, no means of defense against these people.

Look at the picture of the dolphin above, and tell me that you don't feel anything for the suffering and torture this gentle, loving animal would have gone through. It is simply unacceptable to allow this... putrid, callous and simply ANTI CHRIST behaviour (not respecting or cherishing life). If any of the great spiritual master were looking at these people, they would be weeping... for all the suffering that is being inflicted.

STOP USING THE OCEAN (A LIVING ENTITY) AS A WASTE DUMP FOR PUTRID HUMAN ACTIVITES AND THOUGHTS. ENOUGH, IS, ENOUGH.

How Dare they as elected representatives of our World commit such Crimes against Humanity and all the living creatures of this World.
Not only do they disregard life on this planet but they also have no regard for the future of their own Children. The picture of that poor Dolphin is an absolute disgrace. I will no longer trust any Politicians and no-one else in their right minds should either.
As Planetary Citizens we cannot stand by any longer and allow this gross degradation of our World by Fools. These people are Criminals and should be jailed for violations of UN Conservation Laws. We don't need any more weapons of War and they should all be abolished and disposed of PROPERLY. To quote from Capt Paul Watson (Sea Shepherd Conservation Society)- "A species that destroys it's own environment" is a stupid one. WAKE UP FOLKS - WE ONLY HAVE ONE EARTH and this is our last chance to save it before our OCEANS are completely destroyed along with all it's creatures and OUR OWN OXYGEN SUPPLY (Yes most of our Oxygen comes from the Sea). YES WE are committing suicide by destroying the Ocean. FOR HEAVENS SAKE WE MUST RISE UP AND PUT A STOP TO ALL THIS.

Humans are a cancer on the face of the earth. I'm not saying all humans, but as a species we are disrespectful to other species (and our own) and every single ecosystem on the planet. I hope the lot of us will be wiped out soon so the rest of the beautiful animals left on the planet can survive. They don't deserve what we have done and I sincerely hope their suffering comes to an end soon.

Menkit is right, humans are the cancer of the planet. We overbreed then crawl over the Earth plundering, destroying and eating up everything in our path. It will come to an end soon then the cycle will begin again. The Earth was and will be, a flourishing and healthy place without humans upon it.

Even if we wanted to, the ocean is far to vast and deep to affect it with our chemicals. Yes, it's sad to see the marine animals like this, however there isn't anything anyone can do about it. If you really don't like it, start a revolution, just stop all the bitching and crying...

Dude thats realy sad, damn. Mustard Gas is one of the most painful ways to die, and to dolphins? Sea animals are probably the most buetiful out of all Earths species they don't deserve this. Selfish Humans

The ocean has a remarkable propensity to heal itself, as witnessed by any major oil-spill that's ever occurred in history. A year after the spill, things are back to normal. It's highly doubtful that man has the power to do permanent damage to it.

That being said, it's still immoral to use it as a dumping ground. What a shameful activity.
