OWASSO — The City Council OK’d a budget supplement on Tuesday night to extend more than $280,000 in back payments to a court-reinstated police officer who was fired in 2011. Lt. Mike Denton will receive $283,420.04 in benefits relating to base pay, vacation, sickness and health. The police officer, reinstated by an appeals court after being fired in November 2011 for violating the Owasso Police Department’s use-of-force policy, went back to work Sept. 22, city staff said. The municipality also will be required to pay back contributions to the Oklahoma Police Pension and Retirement System, the Oklahoma Municipal Retirement Fund Thrift Plan and applicable employer taxes. The back pay and benefits were processed through the city’s January payroll, Human Resources Director Michele Dempster said at Tuesday night’s meeting. Read More |
