MCMINNVILLE, OR (KPTV) - A former Yamhill County Sheriff's Office deputy is guilty of assaulting a 4-year-old boy, leaving the child with a serious brain injury.

Michael Abo, 36, was arrested in January 2014. He pleaded guilty in court Wednesday to first-degree assault and was sentenced to 7 1/2 years in prison.

Abo had served as a Yamhill County Sheriff's Office deputy and a reserve officer with the Yamhill Police Department.

Police said the victim, who was the son of Abo's then-girlfriend, was taken to Oregon Health & Science University on New Year's Eve 2013 with critical injuries.

The boy survived and those close to him describe his recovery progress a year later as "miraculous." At the time of the assault, detectives said they weren't sure he'd make it.
