WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Former Florida Atlantic University police officer Jimmy Dac Ho insisted he shot escort Sheri Carter in self-defense and never intended for her to die. But a Palm Beach County jury Thursday agreed with state prosecutors seeking a first-degree murder conviction.

A weeklong trial examined an explosive encounter that occurred after Ho, 50, entered Carter's Boynton Beach apartment on Jan. 31, 2011 expecting to pay $160 for sex.

Prosecutor Takisha Richardson argued the career cop got mad because someone he viewed as a "lowly prostitute" rejected him, so he placed her in handcuffs and "pumped two shots into her." Defense attorney Elizabeth Ramsey said it was Ho who refused to bed a volatile Carter, and his revolver accidentally fired during a struggle.
