One bank to rule them all: UN wants new global currency to replace dollar

By Edmund Conway, Economics Editor, 07 Sep 2009

Hey I thought this was a conspiracy theory? Oh well, what's on TV?The dollar should be replaced with a global currency, the United Nations has said, proposing the biggest overhaul of the world's monetary system since the Second World War.

In a radical report, the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has said the system of currencies and capital rules which binds the world economy is not working properly, and was largely responsible for the financial and economic crises.

It added that the present system, under which the dollar acts as the world's reserve currency , should be subject to a wholesale reconsideration.

Although a number of countries, including China and Russia, have suggested replacing the dollar as the world's reserve currency, the UNCTAD report is the first time a major multinational institution has posited such a suggestion.

In essence, the report calls for a new Bretton Woods-style system of managed international exchange rates, meaning central banks would be forced to intervene and either support or push down their currencies depending on how the rest of the world economy is behaving.

The proposals would also imply that surplus nations such as China and Germany should stimulate their economies further in order to cut their own imbalances, rather than, as in the present system, deficit nations such as the UK and US having to take the main burden of readjustment.

"Replacing the dollar with an artificial currency would solve some of the problems related to the potential of countries running large deficits and would help stability," said Detlef Kotte, one of the report's authors. "But you will also need a system of managed exchange rates. Countries should keep real exchange rates [adjusted for inflation] stable. Central banks would have to intervene and if not they would have to be told to do so by a multilateral institution such as the International Monetary Fund."

The proposals, included in UNCTAD's annual Trade and Development Report , amount to the most radical suggestions for redesigning the global monetary system.

Although many economists have pointed out that the economic crisis owed more to the malfunctioning of the post-Bretton Woods system, until now no major institution, including the G20 , has come up with an alternative.

I have been talking about this for years and I cannot tell you how terrified I am of this!!! I had to go to Washington DC (our nation's capital) this week and was shocked by the city. I walked to and from work (2 miles each way) and was given a true reminder of the state of affairs in this nation:

a. mentally ill people walking the streets like zombies
b. people living in tents under buildings
c. everyone walking past these scenes without a care in the world (talk about a perpetual state of dehumanization)

Talk about a wake up call from my solitary walks on the edge of the ocean!!!

I cannot tell you how frightening this state of affairs is...OK OK so let's talk about the DC restaurant which DOESN"T TAKE CASH ANYMORE!!!!! or the airline which DOESN"T TAKE CASH ANYMORE!!!! This is getting to the point that we won't have currency and then EVERY SINGLE TRANSACTION YOU MAKE WILL BE TRACEABLE. How's that for a free country?

The ****** IMF!!! Is anyone awake yet?

174130 Not surprising to hear these plans.

There are actually many in the Obama administration that support a world government, or currency, and a world government control on such things as healthcare or population control.

Its very scary that many people who are pushing for a world government with laws that are more important than a nation's own laws are actually IN POWER right now, advising the president, in various high positions.

It gives me the shivers to see the path we are taking...

999 how can a world currency scare people? If properly implemented it can create a more stable global economy and possibly bring countries closer together.

also "and was given a true reminder of the state of affairs in this nation:

a. mentally ill people walking the streets like zombies
b. people living in tents under buildings
c. everyone walking past these scenes without a care in the world (talk about a perpetual state of dehumanization)"

I can't even begin to say how hypocritical that is, did you not just walk past these scenes. And also, are the mentally ill now supposed to me confined to their homes or even asylums? and finally there has always been a poor underclass in every country throughout history, no modern country is an exception, and most likely there will always will be. (unless you want to change to pure socialism, and we all know that will never work in the US)

Vertical socialism would work.

It has in the past. Not Western past, or European Past, or Asian Past, but South American past...

I agree that mentally different people are our neighbours. I like 'em.

We'll never see a world currency. It'll be chits. On our chips.

No more dimes, folks!

When one takes the time to research the "liberal elite," whom the conservatives oppose, and the "conservative elite," whom the liberals oppose, one finds both "elite" are one and the same. "Liberal" or "Conservative" is not a substantive choice, it is only the carefully crafted illusion of a choice, for both parties come together when they are instructed to.

"The real truth of the matter is, as you and I know, that a financial element in the larger centers has owned the Government ever since the days of Andrew Jackson."
A letter written by FDR to Colonel House, November 21st, 1933

"Fifty men have run America, and that's a high figure."
Joseph Kennedy, father of JFK, in the July 26th, 1936 issue of The New York Times.

If you care to know who runs the world you live in, view these films. If you care not then I leave you with this quote to ponder:

"There will be, in the next generation or so, a pharmacological method of making people love their servitude, and producing dictatorship without tears, so to speak, producing a kind of painless concentration camp for entire societies, so that people will in fact have their liberties taken away from them, but will rather enjoy it, because they will be distracted from any desire to rebel by propaganda or brainwashing, or brainwashing enhanced by pharmacological methods. And this seems to be the final revolution."
